Kyiv, Ukraine

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of the swearing-in of Petro Poroshenko as President of Ukraine.

“It was inspiring to be in Ukraine today to witness the swearing-in of President Petro Poroshenko. During the presidential elections, the Ukrainian people clearly and courageously affirmed that they want a government that will nurture true democracy, justice and rule of law. It is a deep source of pride that Canada was able to contribute to this crucial democratic process by providing several hundred electoral observers. I would like to thank Senator Raynell Andreychuk and former Ontario Premier Mike Harris for leading the mission.

“President Poroshenko and his administration have some tough challenges ahead. They will need to rebuild the country’s political and administrative systems and ensure economic stability and growth. They will also need to do this while dealing with the expansionism and militarism of Vladimir Putin’s regime, which threatens not only the security of Ukraine but that of all Eastern European Allies.

“Canadians have always acted in support of the democracy and freedom of all people. We will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the citizens of Ukraine in the face of this aggression because it is the right thing to do. We will be there for Ukrainians, providing assistance and pressuring the Putin regime, along with our Allies, to cease attacks on Ukrainian sovereignty. We will do this for as long as it takes.

“It is my sincere hope that the swearing-in of President Poroshenko will enable Ukraine to embrace and enjoy freedom and democracy once and for all.”
