DHAKA, Feb 1, 2014 (BSS)-Finance Minister AMA Muhith today said education is a priority sector of the present government and it has been working to increase the literacy rate to 90 percent from existing 60 percent.
Addressing a stipend distribution ceremony of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited., the finance minister appreciated the Bank for taking steps to create an opportunity for education of the disabled children.
Chairman of the board of directors of the bank Sayem Ahmed chaired the ceremony while Gerben Sjoerd de Jong, ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands, attended it as the special guest. Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank K.S. Tabrez gave vote of thanks.
In his speech, K.S. Tabrez said Dutch-Bangla Bank has been working to rehabilitate country's deprived section of the society. Over 90 percent of the stipend Dutch-Bangla Bank is distributing is given to students in rural areas, he added.
Under this year's Tk 102 crore stipend programme, the bank has given 2,518 student stipends, he said, adding that the bank has so far given stipend worth Tk 116 crore to 21,426 students across the country.
Dutch-Bangla Bank has been giving stipend to successful meritorious students at SSC and HSC levels since 2013.
